If you’re like a lot of companies, you’re thinking about adopting the CMMI to improve performance or to satisfy a customer requirement. So how do you begin?
First, understand that the CMMI is NOT a test to pass. It IS a set of actions that great companies demonstrate.
The CMMI is NOT about certificates or documents. It IS about performance.
Getting started with CMMI begins with an independent assessment of what you’re great at, what needs improvement, and what you might want to change. That will give you the data and the plan you need to succeed.
After that, there is some work to do: improving processes, adopting new behaviors, training your team, and learning about transforming your company.
Along the way, you’ll have some checkpoints: workshops, coaching and training.
And when you’re ready, you’ll conduct a formal appraisal. If you follow the plan successfully, you’ll be awarded a CMMI Level, along with admission to a club of other high performing organizations.
